أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ
“Do the people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe’ and they will not be tested?” (Q29:2)
It is from Allāh’s mercy that we face disruption and distress in this world, and that living in it can at times be bleak and disquieting. The purpose of this hardship is that we do not become content with this worldly life, but instead aspire to live in His vicinity and the endless bliss of His Paradise.
Allāh leads us to Paradise through having us face trials and tribulations in this world; He deprives us in order to provide for us, and tests us so that we may be pardoned. He gives us death in order to raise us back to Him. (Ibn al-Qayyim, Ighāthatu’l-Lahfān)
